Cobra
Cobra's prompt was to design and create a wooden
and metal lamp made from pine and 18 gauge sheet
metal and exploring different wood finishes.
Shou Sugi Ban is a Japanese technique of preserving wood by charring it with
fire. This makes the wood resistant to fire, rot, decay, and insects.
Other than the benefits listed above, I used this technique because I wanted a dark brown,
almost back color for my wood. I did not want the color to be single tone, and wanted it to have
a varying texture throughout the piece. I spent an hour experimenting with fire and with
textures to make the grain of the wood pop.
